What is a Minecraft alt account?

"Alt" is short for "alternate account". It is simply a secondary Minecraft account, separate from the one you play on every day. This guide covers what it is actually useful for, how to use it, and above all what it does not let you do.

What an alt account is for

There is nothing exotic about an alt: it is a second account, in the same way you might keep a second email address. Players use them for very practical reasons.

In every case the point is the same: keeping your main account, its purchases and its reputation away from whatever you are currently trying out.

Adding an alt in the launcher

The official launcher handles several accounts without making you sign out each time. It takes a few steps.

On a third-party launcher the steps are comparable but the selector sits elsewhere. Check its own documentation rather than following a random video tutorial: unofficial launchers are a classic malware vector.

What an alt allows, and what it does not

This is where many players get it wrong, usually because it was explained badly to them.

What you can do

What you cannot do

Why an alt sometimes stops working

An alt account does not last forever, and that is normal. Several things can stop it responding.

If an alt stops working, do not force it: generate another one. And never build a project you care about on an account you do not own.

Alt or purchased account?

An alt is useful for testing, troubleshooting or keeping activities apart. It does not replace a purchased account if Minecraft holds a real place in your free time.

A purchased account is yours: your worlds, your purchases and your username depend on nobody, and official support is there when something goes wrong. If you play regularly, that is the only sensible long-term choice. Think of an alt as a spare, not as an alternative to buying the game.
